Meet Carlota: The Founder of Shayard

Founder Carlota shares with us the journey she endured to launch her jewellery brand, Shayard. We find out what inspired her to start the beloved and unique Shayard. Read the tale about the life of a dentist to a designer.

When and where did you first begin?

My all times favourite hobby as a child was making necklaces and bracelets, to give as a present to my loved ones, even though they were very simple. I started when I was 6 years old and after few years people started to reach out to me asking for new pieces and also personalized ones. I understood very early that jewelry is not only a fashion detail that people wear, but mostly something that carries emotional value for them, what made me even more passionate about making these designs.

After my 25th birthday I decided to finally bring my dream to life, launching my own jewelry brand.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

I am mostly inspired from symbolism, materializing a feeling or an idea. Creativity comes at the most unexpected moments, so I have a small sketchbook to write down thoughts, sketches and some inspiration - I would say nature is the cornerstone behind all my ideas, because that is where I feel the most alive. Once I have considered a design, I draw it properly so it will soon become a jewelry piece.

Describe your brand in 3 words.

Sophisticated, minimalistic, timeless.

What is the most difficult aspect of running your own label?

The most challenging part is taking care of all the business-related paperwork, it really is a 24/7 job but it is all so worth it!

Which part of the creative process do you enjoy most, and least?

What I enjoy the most is the feeling I have when I see the piece in my hands for the first time, instead of being just a drawing or an abstract idea. This whole process of creating something meaningful from an idea to a drawing and then to a wearable little sculpture really amazes me.

The part that is harder for me is probably choosing which pieces to launch because I have so many ideas and I want to make them all come to life!

Do you have a mentor?

No, I have done everything by myself, out of my unexplainable passion for jewelry, without any form or relatives in this field. I have studied Dentistry, so I started Shayard as my self-taught hobby that makes my day so much brighter.

How long did your latest collection take to create?

Although the ideas were already on my mind for long, it took a few months to create the pieces, I would say around 4.

What are your future plans?

We should always work hard and do our best to escalate our ideas and dreams, so for the future I’m planning to launch a new collection with very interesting stories behind it that people can relate with.

Which pieces do you think everyone should have in their wardrobe?

I would say the essentials are the Rhea Hoops, as they are very simple but bold for everyday wear, Cybelle Necklace for shinny evenings when you feel like adding a glamorous touch to your looks and Wala Bangle, a piece that you never want to take off when you first try it.
